Government Regulation of the Media

In many other countries, state-run media is common. Even in some democracies, such as Great Britain, radio and television have been run as a public corporation, with government subsidizing the cost of technological development and news gathering. The BBC, which began radio transmissions in 1922 and television transmissions in 1936, is an example of a public service broadcaster. In other words, it was designed to provide high-quality, balanced coverage without the economic pressures associated with private ownership. However, state-run media in many other countries—ranging from China to Iran—is a far cry from the BBC. There, state-run media is used to tout the party line and squelch news that might put the government in an unfavorable light. Indeed, much of the world enjoys little freedom of the press (see Figure 10.4).
